Marriage License

Cook County

Hours:  The downtown locations are open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. In addition to regular weekday hours, the marriage license application unit of the Vital Statistics Department is open on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until noon.

The suburban offices are open from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; and from 8:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

How to apply: Both parties must appear at the County Clerk's Office with proof of age and proper identification and the license fee of $30.00 The fee must be paid in cash.

When to apply: A marriage license is issued immediately and becomes effective the following day. The license is valid for 60 days. A license issued in Cook County cannot be used in any other county or state.

Lake County

Hours: Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and 8:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, except before a major holiday.

How to apply: Both the bride and the groom must apply in person for the marriage license. Proper identification and proof of age is required. The fee to apply for a marriage license is $15.00. Payment may be made by cash, or a check or  money order payable to the Lake County Clerk.

When to apply: Marriage licenses must be obtained at least one day prior to marriage. The marriage must take place in Lake County and occur within 60 days of the date the license is issued.
